A well known personality in Bangladesh , Nobel prize winner for peace in 2006 for setting up Grameen Bank , He was inspired to constitute the Bank after coming to terms with the experiences of women in villages. They need to borrow at a higher rate from some informal sources to buy raw materials to produce a product based on their traditional skills& knowledge,above all the involvement of middle man to get them arrange the finances leads to many women in villages left with nothing or very little to savings for the future. As an economics professing lecturer , he was disturbed by the thought that something terribly was wrong with the economics ,This pressing issue of exploiting the women folks in villages made him to foray in lending small ticket loans to this self employed women by constituting Grameen bank in 1983. The lending at a lower rate made the self employed women to save more for their future needs their by improving their living conditions. Today Grameen bank is proud to employ 19800 staffs serving 8.29 million borrowers in 18367 villages. Most important aspect is that 97 % of the borrowers are women.
The founder of bare foot college , Tillonia , He is famous for educating illiterate & semi illiterate people. The term barefoot originated in china and its village health workers which is social work research center (SWRC) , committed to poor, neglected & marginalized section of the society. In 1972 Megaraj from Tillonia village & fresh graduate from Delhi university crafted a an idea to popularize the rural wisdom from the villages .In early 80’s rural illiterate youth played the dominant role in planning, initiating ideas which replaced the educated middle class , professionals like engineers & doctors Bare foot college six non negotiable values are 1)Austerity 2) Equality 3) Collective decision making ,4)Decentralization,5)Self evaluation.6)Transparency& Accountability. The staffs are not any one from outside but all of them are from villages who handles various responsibilities. A t present this SWRC has and its ideas are getting vastly implemented in Latin America, Africa,USA& Europe. At Tillonia they support to create hand made crafts to sell them in the market , every body is given fair wages to support their livelihood.
He was Pakistani national development practitioner and social scientist. He promoted participatory rural development by advocating community participation in Pakistan & other developing countries .The highlighted part of his work was establishing a comprehensive project for rural development called comilla model in 1959 which earned him Ramon Magsaysay award from Philippines and honorary doctorate of law from Michigan state university .
In 1980’s he started bottom up community development called Orangi pilot project or Orangi poverty alleviation project in north west part of Karachi. The project was aimed to create facilities & infrastructure in place with the help of local laborers& materials, Through this initiative lead to establish schools, health centres , women work centres , this project was instrumental in creating low cost sanitation program , housing program & family planning program also put in place low cost credit facilities for small family enterprises and education .
The Comilla model in 1959 was in response to failure of V-aid program in east and west Pakistan with technical assistance from US government , His Comilla model address the serious issues because of lack basic infrastructure , the integrated development program focused on setting up training and development centre , decentralized small irrigation program and two tiered cooperative systems to empower the poor and needy. His models& programs were implemented successfully in many other developing countries which had similar issues. Mr Akhtar Hameed Khan passed away at the age of 85.But ideas still remain very much relevant and can be successfully implemented in many parts of African region.
